“Raising finance for your business from investors can seem to be an opaque operation and very challenging, as a consequence. At its heart, the operation is quite simple: You are a willing seller (of shares in your company) looking for a willing buyer (for those shares). The challenge is to find the investor(s) in an efficient manner and to achieve the best overall deal to secure your company’s future – both short-term and in the longer term. Much like undertaking an experiment, there is a process that you can follow which will lead you to a series of possible outcomes, financing included. This open and interactive talk will cover some of the steps involved in the fund-raising process:
• understanding the conditions of the financing environment (global stock markets, interest rates, availability of VC funding by sector and region);
• researching the sources of available capital both local and international (angels, incubators, accelerators, institutional VC, corporate VC, family offices);
• knowing the stage of development and cash needs of your business (technology, IP, team and growth plans);
• building a network through friend-raising (getting warm introductions, using 3rd party advisors, state supports);
• matching the needs of your business with the interest of investors (persevering to find the willing buyer);
• evaluating your options and concluding the process.”
